    Thanks a lot for the simple but detailed explanation! One question: Why not get rid of fleeting notes (applying zero-inbox principle)? You suggest linking back to the fleeting notes. In case you have time to respond: How would you apply the zero-inbox principle while preventing information/knowledge loss?

    I completed my PhD in 2019 and would have loved a tool like Obsidian! I’d been saying to my peers for years, ‘wouldn’t it be amazing if we could produce a thesis of networked ideas and arguments, rather than this linear thing?’ It just wasn’t what my brain wanted to do. I got through it in the end but I’m sure it would have felt way more natural if we’d had Obsidian.

    I dont understand why you say to create atomic notes but then you dont do that. For example you create the note "benefits of critical thinking", but that's not really atomic; atomic would be the single benefits, for example a note named "critical thinking improves the democracy". I know the process would be slower, but in my experience only notes like this last one have that quality of being linkable, differently from "benefits of critical thinking" note that is more like a chunk. Thanks, by the way nice content

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams Місяць тому

      You’re absolutely right and that is a very great observation. This is a good example where the note fails to convey one atomic idea per note, and as such makes it harder to link to. Ideally the benefits could have been a map of content for each one in turn. Then if you’re teaching about the benefits, you can look at the map of content.

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams Місяць тому

      Yeah my teaching has been a little more refined as I wrote my book covering all this in more detail. In a nutshell, what I prefer to do now is have the fleeting notes as the quick captures. They are just to get the information into your system with minimal thinking. You're just filtering out the noise and keeping what's useful to you. I like bullet point lists for this. The literature notes is now my understanding of this fleeting note, written atomically with one key idea at a time. This allows me to make sure I fully understand it. I can ask open questions that I don't understand, link the concepts to together, and go back to the source material to make sure I do understand it. Then I take these literature notes and merge them to my slip box as permanent notes. For a new slip box, you wont have anything to merge into, so the notes will pretty much just copy over. But as time goes on, you're going to have to consider how these literature notes from say one book, not relates to all the notes you have from all the books you've read. This is where you do your reflection on it to see if it contradicts or enhances your existing understanding. It feels like more work for sure, because you're going from 1) capture 2) understand 3) reflect. The reason why I like this approach is the understanding phase allows you to let go of any biases you have based on previous reading and properly consider the new material at it's own merits. Great for critical thinking avoiding any form of confirmation bias where you filter out ideas because they don't align with other things you've read. Is this the right way to do it? No idea. Go straight from fleeting to permanent notes if you wish, but just be mindful of what the implications of that may be, such as confirmation biases or jumping to conclusions. Hope that helps.

    Very well explained video. I have read the book. Do the format of the literature notes is the same as the format in permanent notes?

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams Місяць тому

      I often like to use the same format. The main thing to consider with literature notes vs permanent notes is in a literature note it's just your understanding of the material you just read, whereas the permanent notes considers all the material you've read. So while the format may be similar, the contents will evolve in the permanent notes over time.

  • @Das0000
    @Das0000 Місяць тому

    Great video. Almost everything you showed in the video made sense to me if I try to connect it with the Zettlekasten method. I have a question tho. Where are your index cards with the key words (tags) on them? The key words on the index cards are supposed to introduce you to the permanent notes. And when you get into one permanent note it then leads you to another one and you keep doing that until you finish your project or your goal for which you get into the slip-box in the first place. I maybe be missing smth about the index cards but if I do I will be glad to be corrected.

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams Місяць тому

      Thanks. I like to consider that the index notes are a nice way to organise your ideas around a topic. Top level entries are the more abstract ideas, and the sub-entries are the more specific thoughts on it. As for the notes themselves, you may want to sequence them if it naturally continues, but you don't have to. The backlink to your index note will be enough to orient yourself with the other notes on that topic. At least this way, you can have a note that is shared across different index notes. For example, "Learning how to calculate interest rate calculations" could exist in your index note about mathematics, as well as an index note about "Calculating the earnings on savings" or "Calculating the interest on mortgage repayments". Same formula, different contexts.

    I feel like I'm not getting one thing. Why the literature note then connecting to the permanent note? Couldn't you go right to the permanent note from the fleeting note?

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams 2 місяці тому

      You can if you want. But when you get deeper into the process and you have hundreds of permanent notes that already exist. If you are trying to understand what new material (like a book) is really saying, then the literature notes is like a sandbox you can play in to make sure you properly understand it. Only after you understand it, do you connect it to what you have previously learned in your permanent notes. The reason for this is to help avoid any confirmation biases or contractions that get in the way. I cover this a lot in my Atomic Note-Taking book. Here’s an example from the book. If you had read about wizards and made lots of notes about it, and your learning came from Harry Potter, then you would have an understanding of it through that lens. Then if you start to read about wizards from Lord of the Rings, you’d continually have to keep comparing it to Harry Potter before you’ve had the chance to fully understand what Lord of the Rings wizards are like. You’d have confirmation bias, it would slow you down and you would probably miss important key details and ideas. Using literature notes for you understanding of just your fleeting notes in isolation helps free you up to entertain different points of view, contradictory points of view of other things you read, and help you make sure you understand what the author was saying before you decide if you agree. You only make that decision when it comes to your permanent notes. Of course, doing it this way has a trade off of taking more effort. But at least you’ll understand what compromises you may be making if you go right to your permanent notes.

    Hello! Thanks for the video it's very informative. Only thing I would say is that on Amazon, after you publish the book your CAN order author copies to sell yourself and you only pay the printing costs. Also, if you buy your own barcode from Nielson or Bowker, and upload it, you can sell on any other platform. It's only if you ask Amazon to provide a barcode for you, you are tied to them.

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams 2 місяці тому

      Thank you. I decided not to publish via Amazon for the time being because it’s not possible to offer the video course upgrade through their platform. Also, their fees are pretty high in that of the 70% or so they you keep, you pay the full print cost. So the fees are calculated on the sale price, not the profit. If it was a black and white book, I’d probably consider it.

    I really like that this gives you citations. I have a pile of papers that I don't really want to read, as they "might" be relevant, but I don't want to spend an hour reading each one of them. For academic research, references and citations are vital. Currently ChatGPT can summarise things, but in my limited experience so far, the citation mechanism isn't quite good enough. And to mis-quote a source (or to quote a hallucination) can be very bad indeed. So I like the concept... but I'm so hesitant to use a Google product, with their history of abandoning projects. Thank you for creating this video, and sharing your knowledge!

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams 2 місяці тому

      Yeah this video is a little old now and I'm a bit more strict with keeping things in a single folder. As for the Zettelkasten component, it's mostly about using it's more atomic nature, internal links across notes and having the maps of content where it becomes really useful. By having these links, you can keep track of the dependencies you have on the tech you're using. For example, if you have a Map of Content on which SSL certificates you're managing, whenever a thing depends on the certificate, it can link to it. Now if you needed to change the domain, you could find every instance where you've depended on it.

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams 2 місяці тому

      My recommendation is to create one vault as you can start to link your ideas and concepts together when you really think deeply about your notes. And example is connecting a field of engineering to psychology. It’s possible that you could be looking at what causes mechanical failures in engineering machines, but that could spark an insight where you see patterns in personal relationships, such as small misalignments causing vibrations. (This is a completely made up example by the way). That said, I do prefer to keep highly technical topics like programming away from my other topics. But generally speaking, one vault is the recommendation as it allows you to cross pollinate ideas.

    Your course and your book look comprehensive, as well as straightforward and easy to follow. Most of the other stuff I've seen on youtube defines knowledge management as: 1% Taking notes 19% Figuring out how to to export from Zotero into Obsidian. 80% Messing about with Obsidian plugins.

      Thanks. I didn't want my course to focus on the tools as there's way too much content of that out there already. I wanted to show you how to study better and think better using any tool.

    This is absolutely the best video on this subject. I spent hours and almost gave up on this method before seeing this. Thank you so much, and I'll be sure to check out your content.

    I know that this video was released more than 1 years ago, but I hope that you’ve already known that you can use command to toggle between a bullet list and an ordered list. Update them manually is pretty tedious and time-consuming.

    This is the best introduction to Zettlekasten on Obsidian. Short, clear, and comprehensive.

    Imho: a man who commented on 28:33 said the core essence of the system. He didn't go deep into details, as it would have no reason in the context of the fluidity of the system. Hence, thanks to the author and that man from the audience for giving me a precise answer on such a thorough topic.

    Do you recommend deleting Fleeting Notes after being processed into Literature Notes or Permanent Notes ?

    • @Martin_Adams
      @Martin_Adams 4 місяці тому

      I don't any more. I like to keep them there and have your literature and permanent notes reference your fleeting notes. Generally you'll find your fleeting notes reference the original material you've researched. So having that full audit chain of original text, to notes, to ideas in your Zettelkasten means you can keep on top of where your ideas are originating from. That's just my personal preference. You could archive them in some way though so it doesn't clutter up your app, but being able to follow the reference chain can be helpful, especially if you need to cite your courses in an publication of some sort.
